- (-)-Diacetyl-D-tartaric anhydride
Di-O-acetyl-D-tartaric anhydride is a compound used as a diagnostic agent for measuring the activity of serine proteases. It has been shown to have linear calibration curves with microns and can be synthesized by several methods. The compound is usually applied to sections in a clinical setting, and fluorescence detection is used to measure the level of enzyme activity. Confocal microscopy has also been used to measure the enzyme activity. Di-O-acetyl-D-tartaric anhydride has been shown to inhibit other serine proteases in vitro, but not those from humans or animals. Di-O-acetyl-D-tartaric anhydride is a noncompetitive inhibitor of serine proteases and does not show any selectivity for different types of enzymes.
