Di-O-benzoyl L-tartaric acid is a chiral compound that is used in the synthesis of enantiopure compounds. It is a racemic mixture of two diastereoisomers, which means it has an asymmetric carbon atom. The two diastereoisomers can be separated using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Di-O-benzoyl L-tartaric acid is used to produce β-amino acids from α-amino acids, and also as a chiral auxiliary for organic synthesis. Di-O-benzoyl L-tartaric acid can also be obtained by hydrolysis of malonic acid with hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide.
