N-(Diphenylmethylene)glycine methyl ester is a product that is obtained by the reaction of glycine and an alkoxycarbonyl chloride. It is a hydrolysis product of N-phenylglyoxalic acid, an imine. The hydrolysis of N-(diphenylmethylene)glycine methyl ester yields glycine and formaldehyde. The alkali hydrolysis of N-(diphenylmethylene)glycine methyl ester yields glyoxalic acid and formaldehyde. This compound is used as a synthetic intermediate in the preparation of various drugs, such as 1-benzoyl-1-piperazine, 2-acetamidobenzoic acid, and 2-chloroethyl chloroformate. This compound can be prepared with high yield by reacting glycine with ethylene oxide followed by reaction with formaldehyde using a one pot process.
