Description

3-(1,3-Dithian-2-ylidene)pentane-2,4-dione is a high yielding, chemoselective reagent for the preparation of thioacetals from aromatic aldehydes and alcohols. 3-(1,3-Dithian-2-ylidene)pentane-2,4-dione reacts with the aldehyde at the less hindered alpha position to form an intermediate that undergoes a thioacetalization reaction. This intermediate is then hydrolyzed to release the alcohol and regenerate the 3-(1,3-Dithian-2-ylidene)pentane-2,4-dione.
