3H-1,2-Dithiole-3-thione is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) that has been shown to mediate oxidative injury. It is also an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be active against bacteria and fungi. 3H-1,2-Dithiole-3-thione has been shown to have potent inducers of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and mitochondrial membrane potential. This compound is a dinucleotide phosphate that exhibits redox potentials with a high oxidation state. It reacts with thiols and amines to form adducts with the same redox potential as the original compound. The reaction mechanism of 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione involves two steps: nucleophilic attack by the sulfur atom on the carbonyl group followed by elimination of water.
