2,6-Dichloro-9-methylpurine is a cytostatic agent that inhibits the production of purines by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase. It has been shown to be cytotoxic to cells in culture, and has been used as an intermediate for other compounds. 2,6-Dichloro-9-methylpurine can also be prepared from trimethylaluminium and chloride in the presence of methylmagnesium iodide. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds, such as 9-chloro-2,6 dihydroxypurine and 6-chloromethylpyrimidine.
