1,3-Dimercapto-2-propanol is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme adenylate cyclase. It has been shown to be effective against high concentrations of this enzyme in muscle and pancreatic tissues. 1,3-Dimercapto-2-propanol also inhibits the activity of lipases, which are enzymes that hydrolyze fats into glycerol and fatty acids. The rate of reaction with 1,3-dimercapto-2-propanol is slowed by dithioerythritol or phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride (PMSF). 1,3-Dimercapto-2-propanol has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of human serum lipases in the presence of dithioerythritol or PMSF.
