Diallyl carbonate is a carbonate that is used as a cross-linking agent in the polymerization of polymers. It reacts with an allyl group to form an allyl carbonate, which can be converted to allyl chloride by reaction with hydrogen chloride. Diallyl carbonate has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of certain reactions involving carbonyls, such as the Claisen condensation and the malonic ester synthesis. Diallyl carbonate can also inhibit the formation of polymeric films from monomers, such as acrylic acid and styrene. This chemical has been used in biological studies, where it was found to have no effect on calf thymus DNA but to cause significant damage to bacterial DNA.
