Dichlorodiphenoxymethane is a synthetic chemical compound that has been used extensively as an insecticide. It is a proton donor and, thus, inhibits the growth of bacteria by altering their membrane permeability. Dichlorodiphenoxymethane also has been shown to have protease activity, which means it can cleave proteins by hydrolysis of peptide bonds. Dichlorodiphenoxymethane is also known for its ability to inhibit the h2 receptor, which regulates the release of histamine from mast cells in response to allergens. This property may be responsible for the drug's use in treating cancer and autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory diseases.
