- (3R,5S)-3,5-dimethyltricyclo[3.3.1.1~3,7~]decane-1-carboxylate
3,5-Dimethyladamantane-1-carboxylic acid is a mitochondrial membrane permeability transition (MPT) pore activator. It has been shown to cause mitochondrial membrane depolarization and reactive oxygen species production in mammalian cells. 3,5-Dimethyladamantane-1-carboxylic acid also causes genetic damage in the form of DNA strand breaks, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA repair enzymes. This agent also induces apoptosis by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins necessary for cell survival. 3,5-Dimethyladamantane-1-carboxylic acid is an isomeric compound that can exist as either a cis or trans configuration. The trans configuration is more stable and more reactive than the cis form.
