Dicloxacillin is a penicillin antibiotic that is used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Dicloxacillin has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus pneumoniae. It binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Dicloxacillin also has antibacterial activity against Gram-positive cocci, including Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, and Clostridium difficile.
