3,6-Dihydroxyphthalonitrile hydrate is an acidic compound that can be used as a p-hydroxybenzoic acid substitute. It has the ability to affect enzyme activity, such as the Suzuki coupling reaction. 3,6-Dihydroxyphthalonitrile hydrate can be synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde and cyclohexane. The chemical stability of this compound is due to its low light sensitivity and its lack of reactivity with proton or carbonic acid. 3,6-Dihydroxyphthalonitrile hydrate also has a low toxicity and is not easily metabolized in the body. This compound can be used in a flow system to remove calcium from proximal tubules because it acts as a calcium chelator.
