2,5-Di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (2,5DBQ) is a quinone that is used as an analytical reagent for the detection of UV absorption. It has been shown to be effective against Fusarium oxysporum f. at concentrations of 2.5 ppm and above. 2,5DBQ is also able to inhibit cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting the oxidation of DNA bases. This may be due to its ability to reduce the redox potential or react with potassium ions present in cells. The mechanism of action is not fully understood; however, it may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species or reactive nitrogen species by interfering with electron transfer reactions.
