Description

Dithianon is a non-selective and irreversible enzyme inhibitor that has been used in the treatment of cancer. Dithianon inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and blocks the synthesis of ATP by binding to terminal residues at the end of the respiratory chain. Dithianon also binds to metal ions, such as zinc, copper, or iron. This leads to increased concentrations of these metals in cells, which in turn causes cell lysis. There is evidence that dithianon may have synergistic effects when combined with other chemotherapeutic drugs.
