2,6-Difluoroanisole is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It belongs to the class of organolithium compounds and can be used in organic synthesis as a chlorinating agent because it reacts with alkenes to form epoxides. 2,6-Difluoroanisole can be synthesized by reacting chlorine gas and difluoroethanol in the presence of an organolithium reagent. The reaction yield is high, but the conformational structure of 2,6-difluoroanisole has not been determined experimentally. The reaction requires chloride ions and polyatomic molecules such as lithium chloride or sodium chloride for the nucleophilic attack on the electrophilic intermediate. 2,6-Difluoroanisole has been used in Covid-19 pandemic to study its conformational properties.
