Diphenyl selenide is a chemical compound with the formula PhSe. It is a white solid that is soluble in organic solvents. The molecule consists of a central diphenyl group with two selenium atoms. It has been used as an anticancer agent, and is also known to inhibit cell proliferation by interfering with the production of DNA and RNA. Its mechanism of action involves its reaction with hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to form chloro-diphenyl-selenide (PhSeCl) which inhibits DNA synthesis. Diphenyl selenide can be synthesized by reacting diphenyl ether with sodium hydroxide, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting phenolate ester with dilute sulfuric acid.
