4,5-Dichlorophthalic anhydride is a chemical compound used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It binds to the primary amines in proteins and forms covalent bonds with the amino groups of the nitrogen atoms. The antibacterial activity of 4,5-dichlorophthalic anhydride is due to its ability to inhibit phosphatases and carbonyl reductases. 4,5-Dichlorophthalic anhydride also inhibits bacterial ion exchange by binding to the phosphate ion, which prevents it from functioning as a substrate for ion exchange enzymes. This mechanism of action is similar to that of erythromycin.
4,5-Dichlorophthalic anhydride also has a high reactivity towards diphenyl ethers and allosterically binds
