2,2-Dibromo-2-nitroethanol is a disinfectant that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and viruses. It has been used in the production of vaccines against polio and influenza virus, as well as for the treatment of cancer. 2,2-Dibromo-2-nitroethanol is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis in animals at neutral pH. The reaction vessel must be free from nitrogen atoms and disulfide bonds to prevent any interference with the reaction. It has been found to be microbicidal against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. 2,2-Dibromo-2-nitroethanol can also be used as an antiviral agent against influenza virus.
