Dioctyl ether is a colourless, oily liquid with an unpleasant odour. It is used as a solvent for paints and varnishes and in the production of other organic compounds. Dioctyl ether is also used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations, such as suppositories, to dissolve certain substances that are not soluble in water. This liquid has been shown to be a good catalyst for hydrogenations reactions. Dioctyl ether reacts with fatty acids to form esters and with metal hydroxides to form alcohols. The reaction mechanism involves the formation of an acid or base through transfer reactions. It can also react with hydroxyl groups on solid surfaces to produce particles or coatings.
