Dipropyl sulphide is a cationic surfactant that is used in cosmetics. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and viruses by reacting with their cell membranes. Dipropyl sulphide also reacts with chloride ions from sweat to form an antibacterial compound that can be applied topically. This compound has been shown to have a number of cosmetic uses, such as inhibiting the growth of acne-causing bacteria on the skin and preventing hair loss. Dipropyl sulphide also reacts with reactive oxygen species (ROS) found in skin cells, which may have anti-aging properties. Dipropyl sulphide is not active against selenium compounds and aromatic hydrocarbons like benzene or styrene.
