Product Information
2-(2,4-Dichlorophenoxy)acetonitrile (2,4-D) is an indoleacetic acid amide that is used as a plant growth regulator and herbicide. 2,4-D inhibits the synthesis of proteins in plants by binding to the active site of the enzyme carboxylase. This inhibition prevents the formation of succinic acid from acetyl coenzyme A. The reaction mechanism for this process has been shown to involve a nucleophilic attack on the carboxylate ion from the amino group. Bioassays have shown that 2,4-D is effective against many broadleaf weeds and grasses at concentrations of 100 ppm or less.
