1,4-Dimethylimidazole (1,4-DM) is a corrosion inhibitor that has been shown to be effective in protecting metals and other materials from corrosion. It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C5H6N2. 1,4-DM is used as a solvent for many organic compounds and as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and dyes. 1,4-DM also has the ability to inhibit reactive molecules such as fluoride and nitric acid. The introduction of 1,4-DM into these molecules inhibits their ability to react with other chemicals or form new compounds. This process is called alkylation. Reactions that are inhibited by 1,4-DM include hydrogenation and nitration reactions. The conformational properties of 1,4-DM allow it to react with imidazole groups on proteins in order to introduce phosphor groups onto proteins.
