3,5-tert-Dibutyl salicylic acid is a cationic polymerization agent that can be used to synthesize polymers and copolymers. 3,5-TBSA is soluble in methanol and is used as a solvent for the synthesis of polymers. The magnetic properties of 3,5-TBSA are due to the presence of superparamagnetic iron ions. These ions are bound by hydrogen bonds in the crystal lattice, which may be disrupted by changes in pH or redox potential. 3,5-TBSA has been shown to have anticancer activity when coupled with receptor α (RARα) ligands. These receptors bind with high affinity to hydroxy groups on the polymer backbone and control the rate of polymerization reactions.
