Di-p-toluoyl-L-tartaric acid monohydrate is a diketone that is found in rat brain. It has affinity for the cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) isozyme and can be used as a probe to study this enzyme. Di-p-toluoyl-L-tartaric acid monohydrate also has been shown to have cholinergic effects and inhibit acetylcholine synthesis by competing with acetylcholine for binding sites on the cholinergic receptors. The compound was not found to be labeled, which may make it useful for diagnostic purposes, as it can be used to determine the kinetics of CYP1A.
