3-DodeCyl-2-ethynylthiophene is a polyunsaturated ketone that is used as a ligand in coordination chemistry. It is a colorless, crystalline solid with a molecular weight of 204.3 g/mol. 3-DodeCyl-2-ethynylthiophene has been shown to be able to form x-ray active complexes with metal ions such as copper(II) and zinc(II). The mechanism of the complex formation is believed to involve an electrophilic substitution reaction between the thiol group in 3-dodecylthiophene and the metal ion. This reaction leads to an intermediate complex that can be stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding.
