Trifluoroiodomethane (TfI) is a chemical reagent that is used as a control agent for electron-transfer reactions. This chemical can be used to study the mechanism of electron transfer reactions, including radiation and biological systems. Trifluoroiodomethane reacts with methyl sulfone to form an alkynyl group in the presence of anhydrous sodium. The reaction solution is then reacted with trifluoroacetic acid to yield 3,3-dimethyl-1-(trifluoromethyl)-1,2-benziodoxole. TfI has been shown to be effective in controlling the reaction mechanism of several electron transfer reactions.
