N,N'-Diaminoguanidine HCl is a chemical compound that has been used to treat high blood pressure. It acts by inhibiting the activity of polyamine oxidase and thus prevents the production of polyamines, which are involved in the regulation of blood pressure. N,N'-Diaminoguanidine HCl also inhibits creatinine synthesis and may be used for the treatment of gout. N,N'-Diaminoguanidine HCl can be prepared from aminoguanidine by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid in an organic solvent. This reaction yields ornithine as a by-product. The product is then dried and recrystallized to give N,N'-diaminoguanidine HCl.
