Diquat is a contact herbicide that inhibits the electron transport system in plants. It can be applied as a liquid formulation, but is also effective when applied to plant tissue with ethyl ether or by spraying with an aerosol form. Diquat can be used for controlling weeds and grasses in low-level areas such as driveways, sidewalks, and around foundations of buildings. Diquat has been shown to have a toxic effect on root tissue, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein thiols in the cell membrane. This toxic effect on root cells can lead to death of plants that are sensitive to diquat. Diquat has also been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis, which prevents the growth of bacteria.
