Di-tert-dodecyl disulfide (DTDD) is a gaseous compound that is used as an insecticide and fungicide. DTDD can be synthesized by the reaction of butanedioic acid with sulfur chloride. DTDD is also known to be an impurity in drug products such as sulfamethoxazole, which is found in the form of its sodium salt. DTDD has been detected at levels up to 3% in thermally decomposed sulfamethoxazole tablets. The thermal decomposition of sulfamethoxazole produces sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and DTDD. It reacts competitively with phosphorus compounds on surfaces exposed to air pollution. The quadrupole mass spectrometer was used to identify the presence of DTDD in the environment near a phosphate fertilizer plant that released organophosphorus insecticides into the atmosphere.
