Description:

The synthesis of 2,3-dihydro-2-phenyl-4(1H)-quinolinone is a one-pot reaction that employs a chalcone as the starting material. The chalcone is first converted to an epoxide by using a catalytic amount of acid and then reacted with methoxy in benzene at low temperature. The catalyst is then removed by filtration and the product purified by recrystallization from methanol.
