4,5-Diaminophthalonitrile is an unsymmetrical diamine that is used in the synthesis of azo dyes. This compound can be synthesized by reacting a nitrile with formaldehyde and ammonia. The optical properties of this compound are dependent on the pH of the solution. At low pH values, 4,5-diaminophthalonitrile exhibits a yellow coloration while at high pH values it is blue.
