Diethyl (phenylsulfonyl)methanephosphonate is a metallo-serine protease inhibitor. It inhibits the activity of serine proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins. This inhibition prevents the breakdown of proteins in the body, which is important for maintaining normal functioning. Diethyl (phenylsulfonyl)methanephosphonate has been shown to be effective against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, as well as allergic reactions caused by halogen compounds. The reaction yield of this compound is high, making it an inexpensive chemical reagent. Diethyl (phenylsulfonyl)methanephosphonate binds to caspase-3 and -9, which are responsible for cell death during apoptosis and infarction after stroke.
