Difluoromethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl ether (DFE) is a reactive chemical that belongs to the anion radical class. It has a high flammability level and photochemical properties. DFE can be produced by the reaction of chlorine with trifluoroethyl ether in organic solvents. The reaction mechanism for this process is not well understood but it is thought to involve the formation of a chlorine radical and subsequent hydrogen fluoride elimination. DFE has been shown to be an excellent gas sensor due to its ability to detect methyl ethyl, which is often found in natural gas leaks.
