L-3,5-Diiodotyrosine methyl ester hydrochloride (DITEM) is a conjugate of the amino acid tyrosine with 3,5-diiodo-L-thyronine. It has been shown to be immunogenic in animals and humans, inducing antibodies that cross react with thyroxine. DITEM has been shown to cause symptoms of Asperger syndrome in some patients and has been used as an analog to study the interaction between phenyl rings and substituents in the thyroid hormone receptor. DITEM is also used for diagnosis of spectrum disorders such as adult Graves' disease or thyroid cancer. This drug also binds to hydroxyl groups on proteins, which may explain its efficacy against some thyroid cancers.
