L-2,4-Dichlorophenylalanine is a drug that has been optimized to improve its affinity for nitroarginine. It is the hydrolyzed form of L-2,4-dichlorophenylalanine and has been shown to inhibit cachexia in mice with cancer. The drug also inhibits intracerebroventricular (ICV) nitric oxide production and improves motor function in rats with an experimental stroke. L-2,4-Dichlorophenylalanine can be used as a selective antagonist of NOS enzymes at low nanomolar concentrations without affecting other NOS isoforms or other neurotransmitter systems. It is not known whether the drug crosses the blood brain barrier in humans.
