1,2-O-Dihexadecyl-sn-glycerol (1,2-DOG) is a synthetic lipid that is used to study the properties of membranes. The lipid can be synthesized by immobilizing 1,2-DOG on a membrane surface or synthesized in solution and then added to a monolayer. 1,2-DOG has shown to be selective for cholesterol and other neutral lipids in membranes. It is also sensitive to modifications such as quaternization and hydroxylation.
