2,6-Dimethylnicotinic acid is a synthesizing agent that is used in the preparation of methyl nicotinic acid. It is also used as a reagent for labeling amino acids. This chemical reacts with the n-hydroxysuccinimide and carbodiimide hydrochloride to form an intermediate, which then reacts with nicotinic acid to form methyl nicotinic acid. The terminal amino group of 2,6-dimethylnicotinic acid reacts with the amino group of nicotinic acid to produce 2,6-dimethylnicotinamide. The methyl groups at the n-terminus are then removed by hydrolysis to yield 2,6-dimethylaniline.
