5,6-Dihydroxyindole is a synthetic compound that is structurally similar to dopamine. It has been shown to transport dopamine from the substantia nigra to the striatum. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole undergoes oxidative decarboxylation and reduction reactions with enzymes such as cytochrome P450 reductase and glutathione reductase, respectively. The biological function of this compound is not well understood, but it may be involved in the production of eumelanin or melanogenesis. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole also has a redox potential that can generate reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide or hydroxyl radicals. These compounds have been shown to react with DNA and proteins in mammalian cells. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole can also react with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to form indolesulfonic acid which is used as an analytical reagent
