2,6-diethylpyridine is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It has two isomers, cis and trans, which can be distinguished by their melting points. The cis isomer melts at 74 °C, while the trans isomer melts at 73 °C. 2,6-Diethylpyridine is mainly used as a precursor to other chemicals. Impurities in this chemical include 1-ethyl-2-methylpyridine and 2,5-dimethylpyridine. The reactive properties of 2,6-diethylpyridine make it an excellent candidate for use as a reactant in organic synthesis reactions. This chemical can undergo transfer reactions with other molecules such as proton and carbon dioxide to form new compounds. 2,6-Diethylpyridine can also undergo tautomerization (a type of reaction) to form its mirror image called 2,4-diethylpyridine.
