3,4-Dimethoxycinnamonitrile is a hydrophobic organic solvent that binds to substrates via hydrogen bonding. It is a ligand, which has been shown to bind to the active site of malonic acid dehydrogenase with high affinity, and can also act as an acylating agent for nucleophiles. 3,4-Dimethoxycinnamonitrile participates in homologous reactions with trifluoroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid. Citric acid derivatives are used as catalysts for this reaction. 3,4-Dimethoxycinnamonitrile can also act as an inhibitor of the enzyme adenosine triphosphate citrate lyase, which is involved in the production of ATP from citrate. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to lower energy levels and reduced heart rate (IVA).
