3,5-Dinitro-2-pyridone is a nitrating agent that is used in the preparation of other chemicals. It is an organic chemical compound with the formula HN(NO)(ONO). 3,5-Dinitro-2-pyridone has a low activation energy and can be used to nitrate aromatic rings, such as phenols or amines. The nitro group can stabilize the resulting compound and prevent decomposition. This nitrating agent also has a catalytic effect on certain reactions because it can act as an oxidizing agent by abstracting hydrogen atoms from a molecule. 3,5-Dinitro-2-pyridone is activated by heat and cannot be stored at high temperatures for long periods of time without decomposing into other compounds.
