The substance can be synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with 2,7-dibromo-9H-fluorene. This reaction produces the product in quantitative yield. The substance has photophysical properties that are sensitive to chloride ions and polymer films. Studies have been conducted on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) using this substance as a model system and have shown that it inhibits HIV proliferation in vitro at low concentrations.
