3,4-Dihydro-2H-pyran-5-carbaldehyde is an aliphatic aldehyde that has been used as a chelate for metal ions. It has been shown to have low reactivity with amines and amino acids due to its steric bulk. 3,4-Dihydro-2H-pyran-5-carbaldehyde can be prepared by the reaction of ethoxyacetyl chloride with pyrrole in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The synthesis of this compound is complicated by the fact that it is not soluble in water and requires low temperatures to keep it from polymerizing.
