Dimethylselenium is a selenium-containing compound that is used in wastewater treatment. It attaches to organic compounds and forms the insoluble precipitate, selenium dioxide (SeO2). Dimethylselenium can be used as a matrix effect to identify inorganic substances such as selenides or water vapor. The optimum concentration of dimethylselenium for its use in wastewater treatment is 0.01% to 0.1%. This product also inhibits methyltransferase, which prevents the synthesis of selenoproteins. Thermodynamic data for this product have been determined using plasma mass spectrometry.
