Dimethyl D-(+)-malate is a reactive compound that has been shown to be an electrophile. It reacts with cytochrome p-450, a primary alcohol, and microscopy in the presence of chloride and malic acid. This product can also form alkylation products with other organic compounds such as leukotriene A4. Dimethyl D-(+)-malate has been shown to be a stereoselective substrate for epoxide hydrolase, which converts it to leukotriene A4. Dimethyl D-(+)-malate may also react spontaneously with nucleophiles such as chloride or malic acid to form epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs). EETs are prostanoid compounds that have been implicated in various biological processes including blood pressure regulation, inflammation, and pain sensation.
