Diethyl L-(-)-malate is a natural compound that is soluble in methanol and acts as a nucleophile. It is synthesized by the alkylation of malate with ethoxycarbonyl, which generates an ethoxycarbonyl group on the carbon adjacent to the carboxylic acid group. The stereoselectivity of this reaction is determined by the orientation of the two chiral centers on the malate molecule. Diethyl L-(-)-malate has been shown to be an immunosuppressant, sunscreen, and radiosensitizer in experimental animals. It also enhances compactin-induced apoptosis in prostate cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth in mice.
