Dibutyl L-(+)-Tartrate is a chitosan polymer that is used as a water vapor barrier for bowel disease. It can be dissolved in water to form an anhydrous sodium salt and has good chemical stability. Dibutyl L-(+)-Tartrate also has a hydroxyl group and a polyvinyl side chain, which allows it to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. This polymer can be used as an insoluble coating on medical devices such as catheters or prosthetic joints. Dibutyl L-(+)-Tartrate is also used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease by reducing the permeability of the intestinal lining.
