1,2-Dibromo-1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (DDT) is a fumigant that inhibits the growth of insects and other arthropods by interfering with the insect's nervous system. DDT binds to the enzyme tyrosine kinase and blocks its activity. This prevents the production of proteins necessary for cell division, leading to death by apoptosis. DDT has been shown to inhibit the x-ray crystal structures of chloride ions in complexed with EDTA and oxalate. The reaction rate of DDT is also dependent on functional groups present on the molecule. The chlorination can be stereoselective or non-stereoselective depending on which substituents are present on the molecule. DDT is synthesized by cross-coupling reactions between phenylsulfone and chlorobenzene in a solvent such as dichloromethane or tetrahydrofur
