Diphenyliodonium hexafluoroarsenate is a synthetic, organic compound that has been used as an antimicrobial agent. It is highly toxic and can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Diphenyliodonium hexafluoroarsenate has been studied for its effects on the bacterial enzyme DNA gyrase, which is important in the replication of DNA. It reacts with the hydroxyl group of malonic acid to form a covalent bond that inhibits the production of ATP, thereby killing bacteria. The reaction mechanism for this process is not fully understood; however, it may involve hydrogen bonding interactions between the diphenyliodonium ion and the hydroxyl group of malonic acid. Diphenyliodonium hexafluoroarsenate also has photochemical properties that allow it to be used as a disinfectant or sterilizer for surfaces such as floors or walls.
