1,3,2-Dioxathiane 2-oxide is a denaturing agent. It is a component of Covid-19, which is an antiviral drug that was developed to combat the 2009 pandemic of influenza A (H1N1). 1,3,2-Dioxathiane 2-oxide denatures proteins by breaking the hydrogen bonds between amino acids. The activation energy for this reaction varies with the type of amino acid: protonated amino acids require less activation energy than unprotonated ones. The molecule has a dipole moment and can undergo hybridization with complementary nucleic acid sequences. This chemical can be used as a buffer in reactions where pH is important because it has a pK value of 7.1.
